Diving in Malta

For those who want to take in the true natural beauty of the island there is no better way than to head under the coastal waters and go diving in Malta.  Due to the fact that the waters off Malta are extremely clear and filled with wildlife, especially in locations such as the Grotto Bay and the Blue Lagoon, diving in Malta is a very popular activity.

Diving can be done year round although as expected the warmest temperatures are in the summer when only a short wet suit is needed.  On average the water temperature in Malta is about 26 degrees Celsius.

Since there are many shallow waters and beaches surrounding the three islands, one of the nice things about diving in Malta is that all experience levels can enjoy a dive into the ocean.  About 80% of all diving in Malta is performed direct from the shore.

Those with more experience can take advantage of the local guides who offer diving offshore from a boat, with certified divers to help steer and direct your experience.  Popular locations for boat diving include the Blue Hole, Reqqa Point, and Cirkewwa Reef.

Diving in Malta can either be done to explore reefs, caves, or even wreck diving.  Out of the three categories the most popular is probably cave diving, since the rocky coastline of Malta makes it the perfect host to many underwater caves and interesting rock formations.

The best diving in Malta is considered to be found in the south corner of Gozo Island at the Dwejra Pont.  Here there are two wonders, the Azure Window which is a giant arch and the Inland Sea, which is a lagoon that has cut into the rock and sheltered from the headland, allowing for cliff exploration of up to 25m in depth.

To the East of Malta is where most diving boats set sail but in order to be allowed on most trips you will need to show Padi certification.  With this in tow, there are many more reefs to experience, such as the above mentioned Cirkewwa Reef, which is considered to be one of the wonders of the Mediterranean Sea.
