Mellieha and Mellieha Bay

Mellieha Bay is found about two miles to the north west of the popular St. Paul’s Bay and is set along a cliff line.  Although not as populated as the other towns in Malta, Mellieha was founded in the time of the knights of Malta, when a few towers were built to help fortify the northern edge of Malta.

The entire area of Mellieha Bay is isolated when compared to the other towns that have been engulfed by tourism in Malta due to its geographic position on a Cliffside.  In fact, the area is so untouched that many of the locals still make their living from hunting and fishing.

Over the past twenty years however, tourism has become more rampant in Mellieha Bay and now there are many apartment blocks and hotels that line the cliffs on the outside of the main town.

Most of Mellieha is centred on the north of Triq Gorg Borg Oliver, which runs directly through a gorge along the ridge.  To the west of the street is the older part of town, while the tourist sector lies to the east.

Outside of the tourist buildings, there are many historical points of interest to see in Mellieha Bay including the Parish Church Complex and the Grotto of Our Lady.  The Grotto in particular is a passageway in which some have claimed to see visions of Our Lady.

About fifteen minutes from the centre of Mellieha is Mellieha Bay, which is where the largest sandy beach on the island is located.  Due to its vast length of 750m this is the most visited beach on all of Malta in particular for families and sunbathers.

This is also the only beach in Malta that has lifeguards and shallow water for over 100m into the sea.
