Qawra and Salina Bay

Qawra is a small region of the town of St. Paul’s Bay that is a popular tourist area that is somewhat new.  It is found directly next to the Salina Bay coastline and meets up with the other tourist region of Bugibba, which places it in close proximity to most of the main tourist locations on Malta.

It is found about nine kilometres from Valletta and most people choose to take a 45 minute bus ride from the central terminal into Qawra.  As in most of Malta, car hire is not popular given the fact that it has little parking and narrow streets, but finding a taxi is not hard given that it is a very built up area in contrast to the rest of the island.

The tourist area of Qawra is a newer development and includes many amenities such as restaurants and high end shops that are found along the coastline of Salina Bay.

During the day time many people in Qawra take part in sports, which include many water sports and horse riding around the town.

Many people choose to stay in hotels in the centre of Qawra, which is also where the majority of nightclubs in the area are located.  The neighbouring region of Bugibba offers visitors more choices of bars and cafes as well as many discos and karaoke bars.

Historical sites of interest in the area include Wignacourt Tower which is located at the entrance to Salina Bay.  The view is the main attraction of the Tower, which offers an oversight of Salina Bay.

Also of interest is the St. Paul’s Shipwreck Church which is found on the waterfront and marks the point where St. Paul is said to have come on shore.  The entire structure was flattened however during WWII, and today what you see is a reproduction.
