Mdina
Mdina is a small historical city found on the island of Malta. Given it is so small most people choose to travel into Mdina for a day trip, although it is possible to stay at the one hotel within the city walls.
The best way into Mina is by taking a bus from Valletta or from St. Julian’s, which is about a 30 minute or 45 minute bus ride respectively. Hiring a car is not allowed since only inhabitants are permitted to drive within the city walls, but due to the fact you can walk from one side of the city to another in about ten minutes a vehicle will not be needed.
The city has maintained most of its historical architecture, which can be a treat in itself, given the fact that Mdina is dated back to at least 3000 years ago as one of the principle settlements of Malta. In fact, until the 1500’s Mdina was considered the capital of Malta.
During a visit to Mdina the best way to see the city is simply by wondering through the narrow maze-like alley ways exploring the hidden crevices of the ancient city. For those who wish, an audio tour can also be purchased that will begin at the Vilhena Palace and will take visitors though the many unique features and buildings of Mdina.
While in Mdina the St. Paul’s Cathedral is well worth a visit because despite the fact that an earthquake destroyed the structure, remnants of wall painting and a stunning marble floor remains. The Cathedral museum also warrants a visit because it has a vast collection of prints from Albrect Durer.
If you do choose to stay in Mdina the only hotel is the Xara Palace, which provides for an exquisite stay from the hot tub on the roof down to the 17th century art that adorns the hotel walls.
